Fancy Footbridges
It seems to me that of the 'innovative' bridges we have seen over the years, the majority have been simple, short span footbridges, i.e. structures which are not actually required to take a great deal of weight. The bridges above have been compared to their neighbours, generally high-capacity road bridges. It seems that when a pragmatic solution is required, we find that there is no competition to the trusty classic forms of the beam and arch (or for larger spans, suspension). What problems then, have these starchitects delivered us from? Certainly not the issue of urban clutter.
